Carpenter’s Daughters Son I got a letter this morning from you with a handwritten note to go Three little words that spell all is well Summer has ended too soon A year since we cleared out your room with so many stories to tell all is well You always seemed to know like carpenter’s daughters do Some things can not be undone and I’m just a carpenter’s daughters son Just a carpenter’s daughters son You sit in your rocking-chair looking straight into my eyes But you can’t recall his name and this is a long goodbye This is a long goodbye... You always seemed to know like carpenter’s daughters do Some things can not be undone and I’m just a carpenter’s daughters son Just a carpenter’s daughters son

Reminiscence 03:13
Reminiscence Spread the word that I’m leaving town tell your friends I’m not around Take my picture down from your wall It doesn’t look like me no more It doesn’t look like me no more There was a time when we trusted There was a time when we lied Never again will we walk hand in hand but there was a time when we tried Gather hope, gather everything you need we turn the tide, we turn the wheel There’s a way if we surrender our fear And all the things we hold so dear And all the things we hold so dear There was a time when we trusted There was a time when we lied Never again will we walk hand in hand but there was a time when we tried

Grandpas Toolbox They called him from work on a bright Sunday noon He grabbed the toolbox, a helmet to be right back home He crossed the tracks, the train hit him hard Motorbike in pieces A life torn apart I don’t know where to begin I don’t know where to begin You made it look easy but I don’t know where to begin You lived of the ocean in a house by the sea Worked at the ship-yard you practiced your creed I’m left with a picture and all that remains Is a handful of tools and a part of your name I don’t know where to begin I don’t know where to begin You made it look easy but I don’t know where to begin

Faded Summer 04:37
Faded summer So many people so many lights So many hours passing us by I wish I knew you long time ago I would have mended what’s broken in two Summer has left you behind Summer has made us go blind I look for your smile in my mind But summer has left you behind So many places but still no retreats So many homeless roaming your streets Pick up the pieces along the road The past is behind us tomorrow’s our goal Summer has left you behind Summer has made us go blind I look for your smile in my mind But summer has left you behind

Lullaby 03:32
Lullaby We got nothing more to say but words get spoken anyway, I know We talk about the weather and the places that we never seem to go Walking slowly by your side I never once felt more alive I know You meant everything to me now you’re just someone I used to know Little sparrow in the sky Won’t you whisper to me why the rain must fall Little sparrow in the sky Won’t you sing to me, a lullaby Sorrow is a word I know But somehow I don’t think of you that way You nurse another broken heart And hope to make a better start someday Little sparrow in the sky Won’t you whisper to me why the rain must fall Little sparrow in the sky Won’t you sing to me, a lullaby

Tom Dowd 04:32
Legacy of Tom Dowd Manhattan skyline in the spring I grew up playing violin Graduated `42 Then I got drafted just like you When Tom Dowd played the blues a four-track tape was all he used An Atlantic Records engineer He was a four-track pioneer Manhattan project and the bomb I don’t know where we went wrong With every bad thing we go through Something good will follow too When Tom Dowd played the blues a four-track tape was all he used An Atlantic Records engineer He was a four-track pioneer I play that record one more time ”This little girl of mine” And the legacy of ”What’d I Say” You’ll remember me someday When Tom Dowd played the blues a four-track tape was all he used An Atlantic Records engineer He was a four-track pioneer

House By the Lake I used to go fishing down by the lake With a cat by my side that was a perfect day I was eight years old when we moved away But I still remember the house by the lake I learned to crawl and I learned to walk in the house by the lake Took my first steps in the house by the lake I went back again for old times sake But nobody lives anymore in the house by the lake I’m not really sure what I was hoping to find More than a place in the back of my mind I learned to crawl and I learned to walk in the house by the lake Took my first steps in the house by the lake

Horred 03:53
Horred I grew up fast in a little small town it wasn’t even worth mentioning The elderly lived in a home by the road no one payed them attention The school and the church, beginning and end and Christmas, well it came in December... Someday soon I’ll get out of here but you wont even remember No you wont even remember That small town That small town It held nothing for me A closed down station where the trains never stop and the rain fell on the farmer The fields were flooded and the trees turned red and we all knew summer was over We all knew summer was over In that small town That small town It held nothing for me That small town That small town It held nothing for me

Long Way Back Home I woke up late, it’s almost afternoon I couldn’t sleep at all last night I make my self a cup of coffee A sense of longing deep inside You said you’d been to our hometown And that nothing looks the same Empty houses, different people I guess that everything must change It’s a long way back home It’s a long, long way back home and I get on board, the last train home I get on board... It’s a long way home Could it be I’m getting older or is it all inside my mind Yesterday was filled with sorrow It’s time to leave it all behind It’s a long way back home It’s a long, long way back home and I get on board, the last train home I get on board... It’s a long way home

about

Anders Westin tells the story:

During the fall of 2010 I’m meeting up with the legendary Swedish bass player Tommy Cassemar at a concert at Katalin in Uppsala. We’re sitting in the bar after the show and talk about music and Tommy asks me if I play an instrument. I feel a little bit unsure what to say since my musical identity and self-image is mainly as a sound engineer and producer. A bit reluctantly I tell him that I play guitar and write songs. He asks me what kind of music I play. In my mind I’m searching for the label best suited to describe the kind of music I write, but I’m coming up short and instead I explain what I like to listen to. I might have said something generalizing about the greatness of Townes van Zandt… Tommy becomes very enthusiastic and he asks me if I can’t send him a demo. He gives me his address and phone number and I promise to send him a CD.

A year later in September 2011 I receive a text-message from Tommy. A message that would affect me and my music more than I realized at the time. It reads: “I have listened [to the CD] and I’m really impressed! Damn this is good! You have to get this out!!!” I sit quietly and stare at the text-message for several minutes not knowing what to think.

Just over a month later I meet Tommy again and we discuss how to move forward with the music. I need a drummer. Tommy then suggests Peter “Korre” Korhonen, currently playing with Sophie Zelmani. We agree to meet up and record the basic tracks of the songs. Without having any experience of playing together with these two great musicians I’m slowly starting to realize how amazing the result could be. At the same time, I feel like a phony. Who am I? Are these songs really any good? Can I make this happen?

I finished writing the songs and in the autumn of 2013 we’re finally at Studio Löten in Uppsala. Tommy, Korre, myself and Andreas Runeson who, is there to help out with the recording. I am excited and a bit tense at the same time. The atmosphere in the studio is very laid-back and during the recording session it suddenly strikes me that this is almost too good to be true.

About the production:

The musicians on the album “House by the lake” have all contributed in their own way to help shape the music and turn the songs into the personal stories they have become. There has not been any right or wrong, just different ways to interpret an idea or express a certain feeling. The lyrics on the album are based on personal experience. They reflect memories from early years growing up as well as going through the motions of break-ups and the inevitable experience of aging. A canvas painted with simple brush-strokes and mellow colours.

The idea from the start was that the arrangements should be as simple as possible. Only a few instruments recorded at the same time. The listener should experience the feeling of sitting on the porch in the evening sun and hearing the music being played live. However, it took a while before the songs found their true identity and in the process the music evolved in different ways until finally all the pieces of the puzzle fell into place.
